After a long winter, the weather forecast final signals the "all clear"... hikers are anxious to get moving. With this anticipation and the desire to get going, hikers can make decisions that could take a toll when it comes to their feet. Imagine this scenario... You hike 9 miles with a 30 Ib. pack on your back. You're anxious to reach your idyllic spot. In your excitement you dismiss the fact that you have to hike the same 9 miles out. As you start out, the sun is shining, the birds are singing and temperature is a perfect 65 degrees. Sounds good right? Until... your feet start to feel uncomfortable and soon, the heels on your feet become riddled with blisters. You think to yourself... "How can little blisters on my feet bring so much misery!". Your painful feet have truly tarnished the day of hiking you were looking forward to.

The good new is... there is a way to be proactive in preventing foot problems from ending an enjoyable day outdoors. Dr. Reminga talks about blisters in detail. He talks about what a blister is and how to avoid them. He distinguishes the difference between blisters and skin shears. He also tells listeners what to do to avoid getting blisters in the first place. No matter if you're a hiker or you just like to get out and walk, today's show will worthwhile. In today's program, Dr. Reminga talks about how our family history is revealed in our feet. Thinks about this... do you have the same eye and hair color as many of your family members? Are there physical characteristics in your family that are referred to as "family traits"... for example, the shape of your nose, your height and stature, or the texture of your hair... for example? Well... the same thing can happen with diseases and the body's skeletal muscular systems as well. All of which can be passed down from one family member to another. The way this happens is through genes, which is the genetic information that you get directly from your parents. In most cases, diseases or other problems don't have one single cause. They come from a combination of your genes, your choices, and your environment. When it comes to your feet and ankles, studies have shown, however... that foot disorders have high heritability.

There is a significant connection between foot and ankle problems and our DNA. This is a key statement... and one that parents need to pay close attention to in particular. The earlier in life a problem is diagnosed and treated... the better, because... in the early developmental years... prevention is possible.

Dr. Reminga talks about inherited foot disorders such as bunions, hammertoes as well as other foot deformities that present themselves as we get older, however, foot deformities can show up in children as well. Our genetics affect many areas of our health and the feet are no different. Find out more about this fascinating topic by listening to today's program.

Arthritis, in general terms, is inflammation and swelling of the cartilage and lining of the joints, often accompanied by an increase in fluids in the joints. Arthritis has multiple causes; just as a sore throat may have its origin in a variety of conditions... joint inflammation and arthritis are associated with many different illnesses. Arthritis is a frequent component of complex diseases and may be involve in more than 100 identifiable disorders.

Due to all the joints in each foot, these joints can be affected due to the tremendous weight-bearing load on the feet. Arthritis can be a disabling and occasionally... a crippling disease. It afflicts almost 40 million Americans. In some forms, it appears to have hereditary tendencies. While it increases with age, all people from infancy to middle age are potential victims. People over 50 are most prone to arthritis.

In this week's program, Dr. Reminga talks about the causes of arthritis and also describes the various types of the condition, such as... osteoarthritis, which is the most common form of arthritis. It's frequently called degenerative joint disease or “wear and tear” arthritis. He also talks about rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and others.
