In today's program Dr. Reminga talks about the foot and ankle issues that relate to the sport of hockey. This is the season for hockey and whether it be minor play, league hockey, local High School hockey, or... Michigan Tech college hockey, both fans and players are ready to go toe-to-toe with the opponent. Hockey players have to balance... graceful agility, effortless gliding, turning and pivoting on thin skate blades as well as... getting jostled with aggressive body checks, crashing into fellow players... and sometimes... meeting the ice surface with full-on force. So, it's no surprise that this combination of refined physical activity and rough, aggressive encounters can OFTEN lead to foot and ankle injuries for hockey players.

Good foot health and function are the foundation for everything else in sports performance, including hockey. Sports is part physical and part psychological. If a player is struggling to push past a plateau in their performance... their feet may be the missing link. An NHL study shows that foot and ankle dysfunction can significantly alter a skater's function and limit performance. Dr. Reminga talks about his approach in treating hockey players in today's program. Find out more about the important role the feet play in the sport of hockey.

With the rich, fatty foods we eat at Thanksgiving, Dr. Reminga advises a word of caution. He talks about how extra calories can add up resulting in weight gain over the holidays. Added pounds can cause problems with the feet and ankles. Also, those with Diabetes need to pay special attention to the kinds of food they eat and the negative affects on their feet. In addition, Dr. Reminga asks the question... 'Did you know Thanksgiving foods can be a trigger for gout?' Gout is a painful condition that can flair up quickly causing throbbing pain in the joints and especially the big toe. On a lighter note, Dr. Reminga also shares some Thanksgiving humor to pass around the dinner table.

In today's program, Dr. Reminga answers this interesting question... Why 10 toes? When you look at your hands and feet, have you ever questioned why there are exactly 10 toes or digits? Most of us are born with 10 fingers and 10 toes and it's something so ordinary and normal to us, that the thought of WHY our fingers and toes are so perfectly numbered... never crosses our minds. One reason is... BALANCE. We need to be properly balanced to move and function with ease and efficiency. So, those who are born with extra toes don't have this advantage. Even if one foot had 5 toes but the other had 6, we wouldn't be properly balanced... making it more difficult to function. Dr. Reminga has some very interesting information to share about our toes and the reason there are a perfect "10" in number. He answers the question... "Does each toe play a role in how we function on a daily basis?" Also... "Is the big toe called the 'Great Toe' for a reason?" When it comes to the toes on your feet Dr. Reminga has expert insight. All 10 of our toes are important... they are the gears in the engine of the human body, they allow us walk, run, and play sports with impressive efficiency.
