When it comes to your feet, the small... seemingly insignificant foot problems that probably don’t bother you during a normal day’s activities... can suddenly become a very big problem when placing significant stress on your feet as you start to exercise. In today's program, Dr. Reminga talks about holiday-related foot issues. The month of December is a busy month for many people and... the holidays place extra demands on our feet. It’s a wonderful time of year to get together with family and friends you haven’t seen in awhile. Along with that... comes hectic shopping, holiday baking and cooking, long hours on your feet, and... more activity in general. With all this activity, our feet can take a beating. In addition to wear and tear… our feet are exposed to the cold weather conditions as well... causing feet to become cold, numb, and sometimes painful from the plunging temperatures. So, the question today is… How will your feet survive this holiday season?

So, where do you start? Dr. Reminga says, "The first thing to consider is... What are you wearing on your feet?" Before a busy day of holiday preparation, choose your shoes as if you were going to go out to exercise. You wouldn’t wear ballet flats or high heels to go running for example. Without footwear and adequate support ... a whole host of problems that start with foot pain and can lead to pain in the knees, hips, back, and even your head or neck. Dr. Reminga emphasizes that it's not only the shoe you choose but what's INSIDE your shoe may be more important than the shoe itself. He talks about plantar fasciitis, neuromas, arch and heel pain, shin splints, and Achilles tendonitis during this busy time of year. If you are going to be busy this holiday season, Dr. Reminga has some helpful advice so you can avoid the pain and inconvenience of foot pain.

In today's program Dr. Reminga enters the discussion with parents about the importance of early detection when it comes to their children's feet. Some people take their feet for granted, that is… until foot pain or foot and ankle problems limit their activity. If you're a runner for example... your worst nightmare is a foot or ankle injury. What many runners don't know is that their foot issues could have been prevented at an early age by preventing and treating their foot and ankle issues in their early developmental stages. Sometimes parents think that kids will eventually outgrow foot pain, thinking it's "growing pains." In past shows Dr. Reminga has explained that there's no such thing as growing pains.

In any case… foot pain in children is nothing to ignore. In reality, studies show that kids who suffer from foot pain early on have a HIGH probability of experiencing foot problems throughout adulthood. These problems may negatively affect performance in running, sports, and engaging in normal activities with their peers. If ignored, a preventable problem could result in bigger, more serious problems down the road. Dr. Reminga talks about prevention and early intervention when it comes to children’s feet. He talks about specific foot conditions such as flatfeet in children as well as the psychological implications if children withdraw from normal activities due to foot pain. Today’s show topic is very important for parents to hear.
