In today’s program Dr. Reminga, from Northern Foot Care Center, talks about the biomechanics of the feet and ankles. The feet and ankles form a complex system that has a direct affect on the rest of the body. Improper foot biomechanics can lead to ankle, knee, hip, and back pain leading all the way to the head. The structure and function of our two feet are a masterpiece of engineering as Leonardo Da Vinci described. Think about it… the foot and ankle consists of 28 bones, 33 joints, 112 ligaments, controlled by 13 extrinsic and 21 intrinsic muscles. The foot is also divided into sections.. Rear-foot, mid-foot, and forefoot. They function as rigid structures to support the forceful weight that bears down on them when we walk. They also function as flexible structures to conform and adjust to movement on uneven ground. The feet also provide many important functions such as… supporting body weight, providing balance and shock absorption, propelling our bodies forward and side to side, as well as transporting us from one point to another.

Foot biomechanics studies foot structures and foot movements during walking, running, jumping and sport and… the effects of those movements on the rest of our body. The relationship of the foot to the lower leg and the rest of the body is key. As we move, walk and run, the bones and muscles, or musculoskeletal system, of our feet and legs, generates force to propel the body forward. Proper foot biomechanics allow the body to walk, run, jump, and move freely without pain. An important aspect of foot biomechanics is a person’s GAIT. Foot problems can occur because of abnormal function of the feet during GAIT.

Many specific foot problems are caused by biomechanical issues within the foot or lower leg. In order to understand the cause of these foot and ankle problems, foot function and as well as foot anatomy must be understood as well as foot biomechanics.

In today’s program Dr. Reminga, from Northern Foot Care Center, talks about losing weight and how less weight can positively affect our feet. According to recent data, 40% of American adults are considered obese. Obesity significantly increases an individual's risk of developing heart disease, diabetes and various cancers, making obesity a major public health concern. The data reveals a sharp increase among adults from just over a decade ago, when the obesity rate was less that 34%. Experts are especially concerned because attempts to raise awareness about obesity haven’t been able to turn the tide. Between 2000 and 2010, the prevalence of morbid obesity rose by 70% in the United States. So you can see that an upward trend is occurring when it comes to obesity rates.

Some are referring to these statistics as an “obesity epidemic” and warning that we can’t accept this reality as the “new normal” because there is a correlation between obesity and a higher premature death rate. There is also evidence to suggest that being overweight, or obese, places adults at a greater risk of developing foot issues. Dr. Reminga talks about specific foot conditions that result from carrying too much weight such as, Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles Tendonitis, and Osteoarthritis, just to name a few.

In today’s program Dr. Reminga, from Northern Foot Care Center, answers this interesting question about the relationship between your feet and head. This is a question that most people don’t ask themselves. The feet and head are the furthest distance from each other on the body. So, you may wonder how your feet cause headaches?

Your feet are your base of support. They are your FOUNDATION. And when your foundation isn’t stable, this can severely affect your posture. As a result, this kind of instability can lead to various issues with your ankles, knees, hips, and back, leading all the way up to your head. Studies indicate that flat feet, for example, can be a major cause of severe headaches and even migraine headaches. In fact, experts agree that at least 25% of migraine headaches are caused by the body’s misalignment.

With every step we take, our entire body weight is supported and carried by our feet. If you have flat feet, you’re likely to be rolling inward with each step. When this happens your muscles are working harder and longer to keep your body stable. When foot structure is out of balance, the muscles in the lower limbs end up contracting or… tightening from tension, for extended periods of time. These overloaded and overworked muscles then produce signals that can overwhelm the brain.

If you experience headaches it may be due to your feet. Listen to today’s program to find out more about this interesting topic. Dr. Reminga is a board certified foot and ankle specialist with over 30 years of experience. If you have any type of foot or ankle problem Dr. Reminga can help.
