In today’s program Dr. Reminga, from Northern Foot Care Center, talks about Athlete's Foot which is a very common fungal infection that affects your feet, usually on the skin between your toes. It's especially common among athletes as they wear close-fitting, often synthetic, trainers and do a lot of exercise, both of which encourage sweat. However, anyone who sweats can get athlete's foot.

Athlete's foot, or tinea pedis, is a fungal infection that causes red, dry, flaking skin, sometimes accompanied by pain or itching. The condition usually occurs between the toes or on the soles or sides of the feet. In its acute stage, the infected foot exhibits blisters that itch or "weep". Often when a patient thinks the feet are only dry and cracking, Athlete's Foot is responsible for the problem.

Athlete's foot can look different in each person. Some people do get peeling or cracking skin between their toes. Others have redness or dryness on the bottom of their feet that looks just like dry skin. Apart from your skin, there's another important part of your feet which is vulnerable to fungal infection- and that's your toenails. Athlete's Foot can spread to the toenails, causing chronic fungal infections.
