In today’s program, Dr. Reminga from Northern Foot Care Center, talks about the weight we carry around each day and how our body weight affects our feet. When you think about your feet you soon realize that they are a very important part of the body. They really are a powerhouse that keeps us mobile, active and self-sufficient. Given that they bear the weight of your entire body as they carry you through your daily routine, it’s not surprising that being overweight can lead to foot problems. Mary Ann, studies show that there is a correlation between a person’s weight and foot pain.

What happens to the feet with these extra pounds? Well, for example, the connective tissues in the feet stretch out, the natural fat pads found on the bottom of the feet compress and flatten out making it difficult for the muscles to work efficiently. When a person is overweight, there’s an increased pressure on the ankles, knees, hips, and the feet. This pressure can lead to various types of foot pain such as… plantar fasciitis, arch pain, foot pain in the ball of the foot, tendon inflammation, arthritis, as well as fractures and sprains of the feet and ankles as well as knee, hip, and back pain. Once the feet are affected by extra bodyweight the rest of the body starts to come into play due to an “off-set” of the bodies biomechanical function. The feet are our base… once they are altered due to excess weight, other areas of the body can be affected. Oftentimes, foot problems develop from the changes in posture caused by carrying too much weight. In these cases the knees tend to come closer together while walking, which shifts the body weight to the insides of the feet causing overpronation.

Dr. Reminga has an in-depth conversation about overpronation, which is a flattening of the feet or rolling inward. He also discusses many other foot conditions that can be caused, or aggravated by, excess body weight. Listen to today’s program to learn more about “A Weighty Subject”.
