In today’s program Dr. Reminga, from Northern Foot Care Center, talks about losing weight and how less weight can positively affect our feet. According to recent data, 40% of American adults are considered obese. Obesity significantly increases an individual's risk of developing heart disease, diabetes and various cancers, making obesity a major public health concern. The data reveals a sharp increase among adults from just over a decade ago, when the obesity rate was less that 34%. Experts are especially concerned because attempts to raise awareness about obesity haven’t been able to turn the tide. Between 2000 and 2010, the prevalence of morbid obesity rose by 70% in the United States. So you can see that an upward trend is occurring when it comes to obesity rates.

Some are referring to these statistics as an “obesity epidemic” and warning that we can’t accept this reality as the “new normal” because there is a correlation between obesity and a higher premature death rate. There is also evidence to suggest that being overweight, or obese, places adults at a greater risk of developing foot issues. Dr. Reminga talks about specific foot conditions that result from carrying too much weight such as, Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles Tendonitis, and Osteoarthritis, just to name a few.
