In today’s program Dr. Reminga talks about walking for exercise and fitness. It's a great time of year to enjoy the benefits of walking for exercise. Metabolically, it helps control, weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels. A brisk walk can burn up to 100 calories per mile. Walking is the perfect complement to a sensible diet if someone wants to lose weight. Walking also improves cardiovascular fitness. If walking aerobically, the heart beats faster to transport blood from the lungs to the muscles as a result, the heart and lungs grow more efficient with a regular walking routine. This type of walking reduces blood pressure and the resting heart rate. Walking is even a part of medical rehabilitation in cardiac rehab programs. So, you can see how powerful and beneficial walking for exercise can be.

The benefits of walking shouldn't be underestimated. For people with poor circulation to the arms and legs, walking can actually increase the size and efficiency of the tiny vessels that supply blood for cellular respiration. Psychologically, walking generates an overall feeling of well-being. Walking can also relieve depression, anxiety, and stress by producing endorphins, which are the bodies natural tranquilizer.

What should we know about our feet and walking for exercise? Dr. Reminga says, “The most important thing is that a walker's feet are stable and supported inside their shoes. If the foot isn't functioning correctly inside the shoes, problems and injuries can result. I tell my patients that shoes and the proper biomechanical inserts inside the shoes are the only real expenditure for the "sport" of walking. I advise not to cut corners when choosing walking shoes and devices that correct and support the feet. Quick fixes may be tempting but often prove ineffective and sometimes harmful. Foot biomechanics is a science and not easily understood, therefore making the right selection for what goes onto the feet and into the shoes in vital.”
