Summer is a great time of year to enjoy the benefits of walking for exercise! Metabolically, it helps control, weight, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels. A brisk walk can burn up to 100 calories per mile. If you want to lose weight, walking is the perfect complement to a sensible diet. Walking also improves cardiovascular fitness. When walking aerobically, the heart beats faster to transport blood from the lungs to the muscles and as a result... the heart and lungs grow more efficient with a regular walking program. Aerobic walking reduces blood pressure and the resting heart rate. Walking is also a part of medical rehabilitation in cardiac rehab programs. So, you can see how powerful and beneficial walking for exercise can be.

In today's program Dr. Reminga talks about the wonderful health benefits of walking and how the feet play an important role in this form of exercise. He says, "The benefits of walking shouldn't be underestimated. For people with poor circulation to the arms and legs, walking can actually increase the size and efficiency of the tiny vessels that supply blood for cellular respiration." Dr. Reminga also goes on to say, "If the foot isn't functioning correctly inside the shoes, problems and injuries can result." The correct footwear is important however, looking at what's inside the shoe is equally or more important for proper foot function while walking.

Socrates, the Greek philosopher said, "Walking is man's best medicine". And, Henry David Thoreau, the author and poet, said..."An early morning walk is a blessing for the whole day". In today's program, Dr. Reminga is CALLING ALL WALKERS to listen and learn about the important role your feet play in this heart healthy sport.

Dr. Daniel Reminga's Weekly Radio Show "Your Feet Your Health" airs every Wednesday at 10 am & 5 pm on WKMJ 93.5FM, WMPL 920AM, WUPY 101.1FM radio. Listen to past recordings here.
