In today’s program Dr. Reminga, from Northern Foot Care Center, sets the record straight about Bunions and is going to debunk some common misconceptions. Dr. Reminga says, “Bunions are a very common foot condition and one that I often see in my office. In fact, in the US there are more than 3 million cases of bunions treated each year. And, I would venture to say that most people either have a bunion or know someone that does.”

How do you know if you have a bunion? To determine if you have a bunion, look for an angular, bony bump at the base of the big toe on the side of your foot. This bony bump forms when your big toe pushes against your second toe which then forces the big toe joint to enlarge and stick out. There is also a condition called a bunionette or Tailor's bunion that differs from a Bunion in terms of location. A tailor's bunion is found on the outside of the foot at the base of the little toe. No matter the location, bunions can be bothersome. The skin over the bunion can easily become red and sore forming hardened skin or a callus over the bump. Swelling, redness, discomfort, and intense pain can result around the big toe joint which can eventually lead to arthritis in that joint.

Here are some of the Common Bunion Myths that Dr. Reminga will debunk are...

  1. ONLY WOMEN GET BUNIONS
  2. IMPROPER FOOTWEAR CAUSES BUNIONS
  3. ALL BUNIONS REQUIRE SURGERY
  4. BUNIONS ALWAYS COME BACK
