In today’s program Dr. Reminga, from Northern Foot Care Center, begins a 3 part series about the food we eat and the effects food has on our feet. Have you heard these sayings… “You are what you eat”, “Food is fuel”, “A healthy outside starts with a healthy inside” and, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine thy food”? It kind of stops me in my tracks when I really think about it. Think about it this way, everything you consume and put in your body will impact you one way or... another. When we think about the foods we eat, we most often associate a healthy diet with heart health and weight loss, however, it shouldn’t stop there. Most people don’t think about how their diet can affect other parts of their body…INCLUDING their feet. So, the question to keep in mind throughout this series is… Can nutrition play a role in the development and treatment of foot conditions?

The truth is… the foods we eat play an important role in our overall health and can affect different parts of the body and our feet are no exception. There isn’t a particular food that has a DIRECT impact on your feet. however, the foods you consume can cause health issues, such as joint pain, poor blood flow, and nerve damage for example. All of these conditions play a part in your foot health. Being mindful of the types of foods you consume can significantly help or hinder foot pain.

Dr. Reminga talks about and defines INFLAMMATION. Medical research suggests that what we eat can affect inflammation in the body. This is significant because inflammation is a risk factor for many chronic conditions and diseases that affect the feet. When inflammation persists, it then requires the body to recruit extra help to protect the cells that are fighting off infection and injured tissues. When this “extra help” is called on for long periods of time, it can then start to destroy healthy tissue and trigger disease.
