In today’s program Dr. Reminga, from Northern Foot Care Center, talks about GOOD foods for your feet in the final part-3 of his series, How Food Affects Your Feet. As Dr. Reminga mentioned in a past show, there isn’t a particular food that has a DIRECT impact on your feet. However, the foods you consume can cause health issues, such as joint pain, poor blood flow, and nerve damage for example. All of these conditions play a part in your foot health. Dr. Reminga says, “There’s a lot I can do to correct foot deformities and help eradicate foot pain, however, there are things that people can do as well to alleviate a problem or prevent it from occurring in the first place and... making better choices about the food we eat is one of them.”

Have you heard these sayings? “You are what you eat”, and “Let food be thy medicine and medicine thy food”? There’s a lot of truth to these statements. Your feet benefit from a healthy diet just like the rest of your body. For example, each foot has 26 bones. One quarter of all the bones in the human body are found in the feet. So, it would stand to reason that keeping bones healthy and functioning are important for foot health. Bones need plenty of calcium and Vitamin D to be at their best. Foods that are rich in calcium include milk, yogurt, cheese, leafy greens, broccoli, oranges, and almonds for example. Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium. Foods like fortified dairy products, eggs, and some fish like salmon and sardines contain Vitamin D. Strong bones in the feet help you move and go about your daily activities while handling impact, maintaining balance, and supporting the body so it’s important to make sure your diet is supplying enough Vitamin D and calcium. The foods we eat can either help to nourish our feet which are made of bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves, blood vessels, soft tissue, and skin or weaken them. Good food choices can also help conditions such as PAD or peripheral artery disease, diabetes and circulatory issues, and inflammation for example.
