In today's program Dr. Reminga talks about stiff, rigid, painful toe joints, and the treatment that can correct this condition. Joint pain can occur in any toe on the foot. More common is joint pain in the big joint of the big toe... called the first metatarsophalangeal, or MTP joint. This joint is important because it has to bend every time you take a step. If the joint starts to stiffen, walking can become painful and difficult. In the MTP joint, as in any joint, the ends of the bones are covered by a smooth, white tissue called... articular cartilage. Healthy tissue allows the bones to glide over each other with very little friction. If wear-and-tear or injury damage the articular cartilage, the raw bone ends can rub together. A bone spur, or overgrowth, may develop on the top of the bone. This overgrowth can prevent the toe from bending as much as it needs to when you walk. The result is a stiff big toe, or what is referred to medically as hallux rigidus.

Who typically develops a stiff big toe and why?

Dr. Reminga addresses this question in today's show. He talks about conditions such as... traumatic arthritis, systemic arthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis as some of the possible causes of a stiff toe joint. In addition, Dr. Reminga talks about his approach in treating this painful condition. Is surgery always necessary? Listen to today's program to find out the answer to this question and learn about joint replacement surgery.
