Feet are neat! Most Americans will walk an astonishing 75,000 miles by the time they reach 50 years of age. This is like walking from New York to Los Angeles 25 times! Hard to imagine, right? Just thinking about is exhausting, it even seems impossible.  But, it’s not! The average person takes 10,000 steps a day. So needless to say, we count on our feet…a lot!  They truly are our friend.  They carry us through life each and every day.

Feet take our abuse on a daily basis. With every mile we walk, 200,000 to 300,000 pounds of stress bears down on our feet. We expect an awful lot of our feet and yet despite this important role they play in our lives we don’t always treat them kindly.  Dr.  Reminga at Northern Foot Care Center, in Houghton, Michigan, says, “Foot problems are a leading cause of inactivity and disability in our country. Our feet tend to breakdown like the tires on our cars. They eventually spread out over time, the muscles weaken, and the skin thins. We start to lose the flexibility we once had along with elasticity, and our shock absorbers start to fail us. Add arthritis to the mix and we are headed for double trouble. The scenario of inflamed and distorted joints find little comfort after a day of pounding the pavement wearing ill-fitting shoes. Over time the padding under our feet grows thinner and thinner causing sore and aching feet by the end of a long day.”

There is some good news, however. If we pay attention to our feet and seek help, at the first sign of pain and discomfort, from aboard certified Foot and Ankle Specialist such as Dr.  Daniel Reminga at Northern Foot Care, we can head off potential problems from getting worse.  Dr. Reminga says, “If arthritis is a problem with our feet, taking care of them is not only important, it’s crucial.”  Dr. Reminga can identify and treat arthritis and other foot problems by targeting the problem with a precise diagnosis and then recommending an effective course of treatment.

The numbers are staggering, 75% of us will have a foot problem at some point in our lives.

Here are some other interesting facts about your feet:

  • Leonardo ad Vinci said, “The human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art”.  He really did understand the foot. He was known to improve his knowledge of the human anatomy by dissecting cadavers. He was a “hands on” kind of guy!
  • Our feet contain 52 bones, 25% of the entire bone count in the body.
  • Our feet have 33 joints and 107 ligaments that are per foot! Three out of 4 people wear the wrong size shoe.
  • Women have four times as many foot problems as men. This is most likely due to the fact that women like to wear the latest in footwear while men go for comfort. Just look at some of the shoes in your husband’s closet!
  • The barefooted Zulu tribes are said to have the world’s healthiest feet.
  • Not all animals hit the ground with the entire bottom of their feet. Humans, baboons, bears, gators, and frogs do, but dogs, cats, and birds walk on their toes.
  • Paleontologists say that T-Rex, the huge dinosaur, also walked on his toes. Imagine, that this seven-ton, meat-eating animal could tippy toe up on his prey through the jungle! That would have worked if not for the fact that the ground was also shaking!

Needless to say…our feet are our FRIENDS! We require an awful lot from them and more often than not, they deliver. When your feet do start to hurt or you feel pain, call Dr. Reminga right away. He’s ready to help.
