May is Melanoma Awareness Month. Today Dr. Daniel Reminga, from Northern Foot Care Center, talks about skin cancer of the feet and ankles. Skin cancer has different forms however, melanoma is the most aggressive and deadly skin cancer there is. Today's program will help shed some light on this important topic so listeners have information that could possibly save their lives one day or the lives of those they love.

First, let's start by gaining some perspective. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the US, and each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer. About 86% of melanomas and 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet or UV rays. That's why applying proper sun protection is critical all year-round.

The first sign of melanoma is often a change in the size, shape, color, or feel of an existing mole or any unusual sores, lumps, blemishes or markings on the skin surface. Most people have moles and almost all moles are harmless. However, it's important to recognize any changes that can suggest a melanoma may be developing. Listen to today’s program about melanoma as Dr. Reminga talks about the warning signs and what to look for with this condition.
