Those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer are soon approaching and it’s important to keep your feet healthy so that you can enjoy all the activities that go along with a fun-filled summer!
Whether it’s long walks on the beach, walking for hours at an amusement park, or strolling the booths at a local fair, summer means we’re on our feet a lot more. Also, shedding your shoes means that there is a greater chance for injury to your feet.
Let’s face it…summer can be hard on your feet. It doesn’t have to be, Dr. Reminga, at Northern Foot Care Center wants to help keep you on your feet this summer so that you can enjoy all that summer has to offer. Dr. Reminga has some tips that will help you maintain healthy, happy feet.

Dr. Reminga’s Tips for healthy summer feet:

1. Avoid walking barefoot. Walking outside barefoot in the summer increases the risk of injury to your feet. It also increases the chances that you’ll develop warts (plantar warts) on the bottoms of your feet, as well as ringworm (a fungus), and other infections according to Dr. Reminga.

2. Avoid Blisters. Sandals are the shoe of choice during the summer months. However, sandals can be the cause of blisters when they rub against bare skin. Dr. Reminga says, if you start to feel a blister developing, use padding such as moleskin or liquid bandage to reduce friction and irritation. Also, begin by introducing sandals slowly into your daily routine. Another helpful tip is to use a foot powder on your feet to help eliminate excess sweating that can result in more rubbing and friction. If you are contemplating a hike you may also want to apply underarm stick deodorant to areas of your feet that are prone to blisters. This should start a few days before the hike, applying the deoderant each day leading up to the hike.  This helps build a “protective shield” and protects the skin from forming a blister.

3. Wear the proper socks. The best choices are acrylic and synthetic blends. These fibers help to wick away perspiration that can lead to fungal infections. Dr. Reminga says, “The perfect environment for fungus to grow is when moisture of any kind is present.”

4. Let your feet air out. Your best choices for shoes in the summer are sandals or open-toed shoes. It is recommended by Dr. Reminga that you avoid closed shoes during the warm summer days. If you are wearing closed shoes it is best to take them off periodically during the day so your feet can air out. This will help to keep them dry and sweat-free. If you are wearing closed shoes and your feet sweat, make sure to remove your shoes and socks allowing them to air-out completely before putting them back on. This will help guard against fungal infections. Dr. Reminga suggests taking an extra pair of socks with you to safeguard against wet feet for a prolonged period of time.

5. Stay Moisturized. Because your not wearing closed shoes in the summer, your feet tend to dry out more, Dr. Reminga says. To prevent this, moisturize your feet often. It is best to do this in the morning, after you bathe or shower and again at night before bed. This will help to lock in moisture all day long.

6. Use Sunscreen. We tend to use sunscreen on our legs, arms, and face, however, we forget to use it on our feet. The feet are exposed when wearing sandals so it’s important to slather sunscreen on the feet as well. A waterproof sunscreen is best however; it still needs to be reapplied after swimming or sweating heavily. Dr. Reminga says, “Using a sunscreen of 15 SPF, or higher, will help to guard against skin cancer on your feet. Applying sunscreen to the feet is often overlooked but is very important in skin cancer prevention.”

7. Stay Hydrated. Drink, drink, drink. Drinking plenty of water during the hot days of summer will minimize foot swelling. It is recommended that you drink eight 8 oz. glasses of water a day to stay hydrated and keep swelling to a minimum.

8. Wear the proper footwear. Thong-style sandals can result in sore feet. Slide-in sandals and flimsy flip flops often have thin soles and little to no arch support.
