In today’s program Dr. Reminga, from Northern Foot Care Center, discusses children and how the active summer season affects their feet. The level of outdoor activity increases for children in the Summer Season. Along with that comes the risk of injury to the feet and ankles. It turns out that foot and ankle injuries are quite common in children and adolescents and even more-so in kids who are very active and participate in organized sports.

With all the activities outdoors… it’s important for parents to keep their children’s feet protected. When children play outside, make sure they are wearing shoes. It’s awfully tempting for kids to run outside barefoot in the summer however, puncture wounds are more common in the summer months for this reason. The risk of infection from those wounds can be a concern as well.

Children can have what’s called overuse syndrome in their feet and ankles during the summer, especially if they are involved in sports. Dr. Reminga defines overuse syndrome and talks about this condition during this program.
