If you notice swelling in your feet and ankles, you are suffering from what is medically called edema. In this week's program,Dr. Reminga tells us what to look for and what it means when our feet and ankles swell up. Edema is caused by water retention in the body, and... while edema can happen anywhere on the body, it is most common in the lower legs, hands, abdomen, and chest. Swelling in the feet, is called pedal edema or peripheral edema and is due to the accumulation of excessive fluid in the tissues. Swelling is often more visible in the lower areas of the body because of gravity so, fluid can collect in the feet and ankles as a result.

Dr. Reminga takes about health conditions that can cause swelling in the feet and ankles, such as.... pregnancy, foot or ankle injuries, lymphedema, venous insufficiency, infections, and diabetic neuropathy for example. There are other potentially dangerous conditions that can result in swelling as well. Blood clots can be life-threatening if they break loose and travel to the heart. In addition, swelling can indicate a problem such as... heart, liver, or kidney disease. Dr. Reminga also points out medications that can produce swelling in the feet and ankle.
