In today’s program Dr. Reminga, from Northern Foot Care Center, continues with part-2 of a 3-part series about the foods we eat and how they affect our feet. Last week he talked about foods that cause inflammation in the body and how inflammation is a significant risk factor for chronic conditions and disease such as...heart disease, diabetes, and obesity... which can all cause foot problems. Today, Dr. Reminga talks about Arthritis and how the foods you eat relate to this condition. A key point to remember in this discussion is that, when you have arthritis, your body is in an “inflammatory state”.

Inflammation is a kind of “defense mechanism” in the body. It’s the body’s attempt to “self-protect” and remove harmful stimuli and abnormal cell growth. Inflammation assists the body in healing injured tissues. It’s a good-thing when inflammation functions properly, however.. when inflammation persists, it then requires the body to recruit “extra help” to protect the cells that are fighting off infection and injured tissues. When this “extra help” is called on for long periods of time… too much inflammation destroys healthy tissue and triggers disease. As stated earlier, when you have ARTHRITIS, your body is in an “inflammatory state” and what you eat can increase inflammation.

Arthritis is inflammation of one or more of your joints. There are more than 100 forms of arthritis which can cause pain and stiffness in any joint of the body… unfortunately, many of these forms of arthritis are very common in the small joints of the feet and ankles. If you have arthritis, chances are you feel the painful effects in your feet. Dr. Reminga talks specific foods to avoid if you have arthritis. Some of these foods are sugar, high fructose corn syrup, refined, sugar, and saturated fats for example.
