The walking season is HERE! Many of you are ready and raring to go. Winter is over and summer is upon us. Remember the song, “I’m Walking on Sunshine”? It’s a happy, upbeat tune that may be a good
selection to add to your walking play list.

 

Dr. Daniel Reminga from Northern Foot Care Center in Houghton is a big proponent of walking. Dr. Reminga is a board certified foot and ankle specialist with over 28 years of experience. He encourages his patients to get out and walk. The famous Greek physician, Hippocrates, stated “Walking is man’s best medicine”, Dr. Reminga, says, “Walking is the best drug anyone can take without side effects”. Dr. Reminga and Hippocrates have something is common, they both endorse walking as highly beneficial and it can offer numerous health benefits to those who participate. Walking gives your legs and arms the same range of motion as running without the same impact on your joints and bones. Often, walking gets a bad wrap when comparing the health benefits of walking and running. The general mind set is that running is the most desirable form of cardiovascular exercise. But wait a minute…Dr. Reminga points out three important facts.

  1. The calories burned when walking vs. running, for the same amount of time, are virtually equal.
  2. Studies have shown that walking reduces the craving for nicotine which helps patients to stop smoking.
  3. Walking is more beneficial than running when it comes to burning intra-abdominal fat, the fat that surrounds the vital organs in the body. Laymen’s terms…belly fat! Now do I have your attention? We all know that belly fat is one of the most difficult and stubborn areas to loose fat.

Most of us are all for burning calories more efficiently and getting rid of belly fat…right? What are the risks of belly fat? Dr. Reminga says, “Belly fat increases the production of LDL, bad cholesterol, and triglycerides. As a result insulin can become less effective in controlling blood sugar, so insulin resistance sets in, this then sets the stage for diabetes, heart disease, and more.”

The American Heart Association outlines these benefits…

  1.  Walking reduces the risk of coronary heart disease
  2.  Walking improves blood pressure and blood sugar levels
  3.  Walking improves blood lipid profiles (cholesterol and triglycerides)
  4.  Walking helps maintain body weight and lower the risk of obesity
  5.  Walking enhances mental well being
  6.  Walking reduces the risk of osteoporosis
  7.  Walking reduces the risk of breast and colon cancer
  8.  Walking reduces the risk of non-insulin dependent (type 2) diabetes

How do we start?

Ok, do I have your attention? How do we start? Dr. Reminga says, “When starting a walking program, it’s best to start slow, your body and feet need to acclimate to this new exercise routine. Start at a pace that is comfortable for you, then, gradually increase your pace as you progress with your walking program. Each week add minutes to your walking time. A rule of thumb? You should be breathing hard but you should still able to carry on a conversation. In the beginning and at the end of your walk, incorporate a five minute warm up and slow down. The goal is to increase your walking time to 30-40 minutes, 5 times a week”. Before any exercise program begins Dr. Reminga recommends that people see a doctor to get checked.

What is the first step?

First and foremost, it is best to get your feet evaluated by a board certified foot and ankle specialist like Dr. Reminga. Dr. Reminga can evaluate your feet and prevent injuries for occurring when starting a walking program. The more comfortable your feet are, the more you are likely to get out and walk. Dr. Reminga says, “The shoes you choose are vital when getting off on the right foot with a walking routine. Choose a walking shoe that has a rigid heel and plenty of padding. Also, the ‘torque test’ should be done on a walking shoe. The ‘torque test’ is done by holding the shoe with one hand on the back heel of the shoe and one hand on the toe of the shoe, then, try and twist the shoe. The walking show shouldn’t be easily twisted. There should be some rigidity and resistance when doing the “torque test”. The walking shoe should make you feel stable and must work well with your individual foot mechanics.” Foot mechanics should be evaluated by a board certified foot specialist, Dr. Reminga can then recommend the proper correction to accommodate your unique situation. Dr. Reminga may prescribe a custom, corrective shoe insert, or custom orthotic. A mold is taken of your foot and a custom orthotic is devised just for you. This orthotic device will help to correct the abnormal biomechanical issues that affect the foot. It is important to have a foot specialist, like Dr. Reminga, prescribe and provide the custom orthotics for your feet. It all begins with the proper evaluation and diagnosis of your foot problem. You may not be aware of a foot issue that could put an end to your walking program if left untreated.

At Northern Foot Care Center, we provide a wide range of quality walking and running shoes that are available to the public. Our shoes are personally selected and recommended by Dr. Reminga. For starters…walkers may need an extra wide shoe, or an extra deep shoe to accommodate an individuals needs.

In addition…

When examining the proper walking shoe, check the inside of the shoe for lumps and bumps. The inside should be smooth, free of bulky stitches and seams. The heel of the shoe should fit snug and secure. When trying on the shoe, the shoe should not slide on the floor. If the shoe slides when trying them on, they will slide when you are walking as well. This could result in injury. You should also be able to wiggle your toes to some degree with approximately ½ to a full thumbs width between your toe and the end of the shoes toe box. In addition, be aware that your ankles don’t roll in the shoes, this is a set up for injury as well. If the shoes have an insert, it is best to take them out and replace them with the prescribed custom orthotic insert that you receive from Dr. Reminga. If you have a known foot issue, such as bunions, hammer toes, plantar fasciitis, heel pain or any other type of foot problem, it is best to be evaluated by Dr. Reminga to find out what the proper shoes are for your situation and also if you need a prescribed custom orthotic insert.

Being evaluated and seeking the opinion from an expert like Dr. Reminga, will help make your walking program a great success. There are many health benefits to walking. Take advantage of long summer days, lovely weather, and opportunity to improve your health. Walking is proven to increase the  “feel good” endorphins in your body.
