Do you ever think about the inside of your shoes? What’s going on in there? If your feet are sore and achy by the end of the day, or if you are experiencing any type of foot pain, these questions may be important to ask yourself. Dr. Reminga at Northern Foot Care Center, in Houghton, MI says, “Your feet my not be functioning properly on their own. Strains, aches, and pains in the legs, thighs, and lower back may be due to abnormal foot mechanics. In addition, many people have a slight difference in the length of each leg (limb length discrepancy) which can also cause aches and pains. Custom prescribed orthotics may be a solution.”

Here are some indications that you may need custom prescribed orthotics:

  • One side of the sole on your shoe wears out faster than the other side.
  • You have chronic pain in your lower back, heels, hips or knees.
  • Your toes are not straight.
  • You have frequent ankle twists and sprains.
  • Your feet point inward or outward when you walk.
  • Your legs are achy and feel exhausted.

These are just some of the signs that you may need custom prescribed orthotics. Dr. Reminga says, “All orthotics are not the same. Some people loosely refer to “shoe inserts” or “arch supports” as orthotics. This is a misuse of the term “orthotic” and needs clarification. Arch supports and shoes inserts are made for standard shoes sizes and are widely available; however, they are not suitable for everyone. Improperly prescribed and fitted devices for the shoes can injure healthy biomechanics, gait, and posture which can create more problems instead of less.” Anyone can provide mass-produced shoe inserts and call them orthotics. Only doctors that specialize in the foot and ankle, such as Dr. Reminga, are trained and licensed to diagnose medical conditions and prescribe orthotics.

Dr. Reminga at Northern Foot Care Center is board certified and an expert in the foot and ankle. He can properly diagnose and prescribe the correct orthotic for his patients. Properly prescribed orthotics by Dr. Reminga has relieved debilitating pain for countless patients. Many people who would not be able to take a step without pain are able to walk normally and live more active lives. Orthotics and other conservative care options can even eliminate the need for podiatric foot surgery. At Northern Foot Care Center, Dr. Reminga wants to make sure you have all the options available to you so that you can make an educated choice about your foot health.
