In today's program Dr. Reminga talks about foot conditions that relate to winter weather. Cold, winter weather can cause many foot related problems. The risk increases as people participate in a wide range of winter sports such as... skiing, snowboarding, ice hockey, figure skating, snowmobiling, and ice fishing for example.

Extra caution is necessary in protecting feet from weather related problems. Problems can range from dry skin to more serious problems like frostbite. What are winter-related foot conditions? In this week’s program, Dr. Reminga talks about the problems that cold weather can cause.

Chilblains for example, or sometimes called Pernio, is a cold-weather condition that appears as small, itchy, painful lumps that develop on the skin. Did you know that Chilblains are quite common? Raynaud's Phenomenon can be another worrisome winter foot condition. Raynaud's is brought on by very cold temperatures that cause small blood vessels to spasm and tighten which in turn... limits circulation in the extremities, such as the feet and hands. Have you ever heard of Skiers Toe? If you look down at your feet and see a black toenail, you may have skier's toe or medically known as "subungual hematoma". And then there’s Frostbite. Almost 50% of frostbite cases involve the feet and ankles.

Learn more about these cold weather conditions and how to avoid them. Snuggle in, grab a cup of your favorite warm beverage and listen to today’s program.
